Today marks the end of one hell of a fashion month. New York kicked it off back in September and London, Milan, and Paris follow suit with a combination of digital and socially distanced presentations. There may have been some aspects we missed (the thrill of the live shows, the street style, some designers that chose not to show, etc.), but overall, I think the fashion industry as a whole really showed its strength and perseverance. So without further ado, here are the top spring/summer 2021 trends from this past fashion month!
1. Elevated Sweats
We all saw this one coming, right? As if athleisure hadn’t already been becoming a quickly adopted trend, these past few months at home have certainly accelerated it. Our comfy cozy state of mind was reflected in many shows throughout fashion month. Cynthia Rowley, Rosetta Getty, and Zero + Maria Cornejo all showed off elevated sweat sets during NYFW. Balenciaga showed an oversized tracksuit in Paris and Prada had a slew of sweatshirts at its show in Milan. What I found extra interesting about Prada’s collection was that if you look closely, you can see they found a way to insert their label on their garments specifically on the chest up. Very clever tactic considering many Prada consumers will probably still be working from home months from now…which means a whole lot of zoom calls…hence the peculiar Prada label placement if you’re catching my drift 😉. Either way, designers are anticipating the need for comfort and I’m pretty on board with it!
2. Cherry Red
This powerful color was all over the place this month! There are few colors as bold and uncompromising as red, which might be the look we’ll all want to go for as we venture back out into the world. If we’re going to spend money on clothes to wear out, might as well have them make a statement, right? Alice + Olivia, Molly Goddard, Fendi, Givenchy, Isabel Marant, and Kenzo all showed striking, cherry red pieces during their presentations. And not just pops of the color. No, no that wouldn’t be enough! These lovely looks were full on red, so get ready to bring the heat this spring!
3. Imaginative Graphic Prints
Never before have I seen so much artistic flair depicted on pieces of clothing! This month, designers across New York, London, Milan, and Paris all amped up their creativity and showcased vibrant, whimsical graphics. I noticed that a lot of designers from London Fashion Week in particular displayed these prints unapologetically (Burberry, Christopher Kane, Vivienne Westwood), but designers like Marni, Libertine, and Schiaparelli all delivered as well. Perhaps they all had a little extra time on their hands to dream up these prints 🤔. Wherever the inspiration came from, I can’t complain!
