One of the Scariest Things I’ve Ever Done

Adrenaline junkies read on
There are a lot of really scary, adrenaline inducing activities in this world. Bungie jumping, white water rafting, telling someone you love them first… I, personally, have never been one to partake in such activities. Some call it being risk averse, others call it being a wimp. Frame it how you will, I’m not the type of person who ever thought they’d be dangling their legs above Central Park from thousands of feet in the air…

Alright, let me back up and explain. A few weeks ago, I went on a doors-off, 30-minute helicopter ride over Manhattan. No, this is not just a causal Saturday afternoon activity for me! I had gotten tickets around this time last year through a company called FlyNYON during their Black Friday sale. The tickets were reasonable with the promotion they had – all in all it came out to about $250 per ticket once I upgraded to the doors-off package.

Let me be clear – I had originally signed up for a 12-minute flight with the doors ON! That alone would’ve been more than enough of a thrill for me. But once I got to the terminal on the day of the fight, I was somehow persuaded into upgrading my ride…at which point my cortisol levels shot up higher than the helicopters whipping around us 😅. My heart was pounding as I walked across the tarmac. There are 6 passengers per flight, and we didn’t get to choose where we sat. So of course, your girl was assigned to sit in the cockpit next to the pilot 😱. I frantically thought of just calling it off and turning back.

The pilot harnessed me in and showed me all of controls to be sure not to touch (no pressure, right?) and before I knew it, we were up in the air flying over midtown Manhattan. I was SHAKING. We were given the signal for when to stick our legs out and when to pull them back in, and the moment I swung my legs out for the first time is one I’ll never forget. My palms were sweating, my heart was racing, and I had the biggest smile on my face.

I think this experience was a very visceral metaphor for the benefits of stepping out of our comfort zones. You may not feel like you’re ready for an opportunity that comes your way, but if you embrace it, you may just end up having the time of your life…and getting some pretty cool pictures 😏.

By the end of the flight, I was absolutely buzzing with joy. I even managed to snag a selfie with the pilot! This was by far the scariest, yet most exhilarating thing I’ve ever done! 10/10 would recommend, even for the more risk averse among us 😉. Cheers to stepping out of our comfort zones and soaring far above our own limits!
